Lessons for other UK teams

If you are moving from board oversight to platform controls, start smaller than your instincts suggest. Pick one customer journey, one channel cluster and one reporting cycle. Name owners early. Put dates on reviews. Define acceptance criteria a delivery team can test by Friday. Good examples include “suppression updates propagate to platform X within 24 hours” or “withdrawn consent prevents inclusion in segment Y on the next scheduled refresh”. Bad examples sound strategic and cannot be verified. If your plan has no named owners and dates, it is not a plan.

Keep policy language and operational language linked but separate. Boards need principle, exposure and assurance status. Campaign teams need system rules, exceptions and escalation paths. Mixing those levels in one document creates confusion and stale content. Better to maintain a short governance statement and a live control register connected by IDs, owners and review dates.

Do not assume more controls automatically mean lower risk. Some controls create new failure points of their own. Treat governance as part of service design, not a layer that sits on top of it. Customer trust is shaped by what the platform does, not what the policy says.
